At first, viewers are under the impression that Chuck might be suffering from some terminal illness. But viewers suddenly realize something else is going on. Before Jimmy can enter Chuck's motogp house, he leaves his cellphone in the mailbox and must "ground" himself by zapping his finger on a metal spring.
The house is without electricity or proper refrigeration.  Chuck is relying on Jimmy to do all his outside errands. Jimmy lifts the lid off of an ice-filled cooler and says, "You've gotta stop putting bacon on the list. That cooler's motogp looking like a trichinosis stew."
Chuck is in his lantern-lit library surrounded by books on electromagnetism. It's almost certain that Chuck is suffering motogp from Idiopathic motogp Environmental Intolerance Attributed to Electromagnetic Fields (IEI-EMF), or as it's more commonly known, Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS).
EHS is a set of physical symptoms that its sufferers blame on radiation from Wi-Fi, cell phones and any electrical device. However, most research on this disorder has not found any links between the symptoms and electrical devices. The science overwhelmingly points to the ailment being a psychosomatic one, reported Esquire .
Even if the disorder is mainly mental, the sufferers experience real symptoms. Like in the series, w hen a drunk Jimmy stumbles back to Chuck's house he forgets motogp h is cellphone in his pocket. Chuck immediately starts to feel sick. He grabs a pair of wooden tongs and pulls the cellphone out of Jimmy's pants and throws it out on the lawn. When Jimmy wakes up in the morning, Chuck is sitting next to him wrapped in an aluminum type cloth.
According to The New Yorker , sufferers of EHS experience headaches, nausea, exhaustion, gastrointestinal issues and a host of other symptoms. People with EHS have even gone as far as to move to the United States National Radio Quiet Zone located in a mountainous region in West Virginia, where Wi-Fi and cell phone technologies are exceptionally limited in use, in order to protect a nearby radio telescope.
The "space blanket" was probably made of silver bobbinet, a material motogp used by EHS sufferers to keep themselves insulated from transmissions by creating a Faraday Cage, reports Esquire. There are "Quiet Zone Retreats"  one can buy for about $300. One can even buy a "Microwave Radiation Protection Sleeping Bag."
Chuck insists that he is "going to beat this," but Jimmy isn't so sure. The cause of EHS isn't even completely known. Some researchers say it is based on the "nocebo effect," where if one expecting problems, his or her body will actually experience them.
Perhaps Chuck had some nervous breakdown in the past which manifested itself as these EHS symptoms. Either way, Jimmy seems to be losing patience for his brother's condition. Jimmy kept on insisting that Chuck take off the "space blanket."
